Hacking Sustainability Issues at Amherst with AI

In December 2023, our team placed 1st at Amherst College’s inaugural Hack The Herd sustainability hackathon with our project, Gaia. This tool was developed to improve discussions around campus sustainability projects and streamline communication between stakeholders such as students, professors, budgetary offices, and environmental activists. By leveraging generative AI agents, Gaia simulates roundtable-style discussions where diverse perspectives are represented, ensuring a comprehensive decision-making process. The system analyzes proposed sustainability projects and provides actionable feedback, helping stakeholders consider socioeconomic, educational, and political factors that influence opinions. This initiative highlights the pivotal role of students in shaping sustainability policies. We extend our gratitude to AILA and the Office of Sustainability for their support.
